(part 1: https://pastebin.com/edit/XUqteu0J) (part 2: https://pastebin.com/crap1WXs) ((old) canon ending: https://pastebin.com/cxPDcnwM) PART 3 (few hours later, somewhere in Tammela plateau) >"Got to hand it to the Neighbour, when it comes to landing operations they certainly don't hold anything back!" Mikko, the FO-NCO's assistant, exclaims as he reloads the captured PKP & sticks the barrel out of the side window in the trunk, somehow managing to maintain his balance as you zig-zag down the road at 60km/h with ruskies shooting after you. >"Shut your piehole and watch our six!" Tommi, your team leader barks while sticking his own rifle's barrel out of his window. You had been ordered to accompany 1st platoon to fight the enemy on the other side of town before they could re-group after landing. The plan had succeeded only partially & you along with two patrols from the 1st platoon had gotten separated from the others when the order to withdraw had come, The six grunts now following you in their own Defender, with most of the windows already shot out. >"Alpha two is still following us & at least someone there is returning fire!" Mikko reports quickly. >"Kilo 10, Mike 1" Tommi tries reaching the company commander on radio. >"Kilo 10" the commander's voice responds. >"Kilo 10, we are coming back at point Quebec 12, Alpha two is right behind us, Mike 1" he reports so that friendlies know not to shoot when you come in. >"Mike 1, whole Alpha 2?" captain asks, apparently 1st's platoon leader was aware of casualties in his second squad despite the separation. >"Kilo 10, Alpha 2 is 3 black, Mike 1" Tommi replies with a simple code for "three dead/missing." >"...Kilo 10" captain finally responds. >After you have gotten away from the enemy you comment on what the lance corporal said before Tommi told him to shut up: >"He's right you know, landing what seems to be a whole battalion here in the first wave seems a bit much even for a Russian Guards Air Assault Division" >"What did the captain say about speculating?" Tommi reminds you of commander's words, officially the unit from which these ruskies are from is still unknown, even if their identity is pretty obvious. >"We were both on command post & saw the screen when the markers showed up" you in turn remind Tommi, the fact that the choppers entered Finnish airspace a bit to East from Helsinki left no questions about where the choppers came from. >"Mike 1, Mike 10" the artillery liaison calls your team leader on radio. >"Mike 1" Tommi responds. >"Go to Sierra 6, Bravo 10 needs an FO and you can get there faster" major K orders just in time for you to turn left to go to Sierra 6 instead of turning right to return to the command post. >"Mike 1" Tommi replies before calling for Alpha 2: "Did you get that Alpha 2?", their hand-held radio doesn't have the range to reach command post from here, but they *should* be able to hear everything coming from there. >"Mike 1, Alpha 2, affirmative, we'll head back on our own, out!" the squad's assistant leader replies & you go your separate ways. >"I'd feel more comfortable if they came along" Jussi, the FO-NCO says from the back seat, voicing everyone's feelings on the matter. >"You and me both, but their squad is down to 2/3 & they've got wounded, they deserve a breather" Tommi replies. Sierra 6 isn't only a wide, open space but also right next to an important part of the national power grid, not to mention the power plant that's also nearby. >"This is going to be a long day", you say as you flash the agreed-upon signal the moment you come in view from where 2nd platoon's "stopper" should be covering this approach. You see no reply but that is to be expected, the only reaction you are supposed to get is a burst of 7.62 and/or a 66mm HEAT -rocket to the face should you fail to flash the correct signal. ************** >You turn off the road and drive towards the main entrance to a horse race track, a sentry gestures towards a warehouse & you drive there to find the Bravo 10 waiting for you, waving you to drive inside. >After disembarging you gather around Bravo 10 who immediately proceeds to explain the situation, the major road passing a powergrid substation is mined & defended by Bravo's second squad, a squad and a half from an MP platoon protecting the nearby powerplant plus a 'militia' consisting of a dozen or so local reservists who didn't get called up & once the evacuation order came insisted on staying behind to help. Your team's job is to support them by plotting a firing plan for the mortars, that is a list of pre-planned target coordinates the mortars can switch to on a moment's notice in order to bring in accurate mortar fire on priority targets without having to calculate target coordinates for each firing order separately. >"In addition to that, you'll naturally be fighting alongside with them, how much fire support do you think we can expect to get?" Bravo 10 finishes the briefing with a question. >"Let's see, we are a bit far from the mortar platoon, but we have been allocated 24 rounds plus a 'half-strike' or 27 rounds of 81mm from them as well as 24 rounds plus a 'half-strike' of 36 of 120mm from a mortar company stationed in the area, I suggest we designate this area as the barrier, with the command "Tali" both units will fire a half-strike in the barrier, the rest of the ready-made targets will be plotted once I have seen the terrain for myself" Tommi responds while pointing a stretch of the main road the enemy could not be allowed to get through with anything heavier than a bicycle. >"Sounds like a plan, keep me posted on any new developments regarding our fire support" Bravo 10 replies, satisfied with what he has heard. >"Ok, let's get moving, is there anything we should take with us to Bravo two and/or the reinforcements?" Tommi says before asking one last question. >"Yes and no, there are some full belt boxes for PKM you could take, but I doubt the two gunners there could go through it all" Bravo 10 replies with a troubled expression. >"We have a captured PKP with maybe a half of a 250 round belt left we could be talked into handing over to the militia, I doubt they have machineguns" Tommi responds. >"Really? That's Godsent! As for the militia they have one "Emma" and a Suomi plus a mix of semiauto AKs and ARs" Bravo 10 exclaims and summarizes the militia's arsenal. >"Which collector's gunsafe did they raid?" Tommi asks jokingly, already guessing the answer. >"The collector is one of the militiamen, he would have brought his M/32-33 as well if it wasn't waiting for repairs." >"That's too bad, a medium MG would have come in handy, at least until we had to move." >"Indeed, now get going already, we don't have all day!" Bravo 10 finishes the conversation impatiently. >You return to your vehicle and drive to Bravo 2's positions, you park the Defender in an empty garage and go to Bravo 2 actual who shows the positions on his map, your team starts plotting the targets & you transmit the coordinates to both Mike 10 and the mortar units. >Almost as soon as your team is finished preparing the FO -post the ruskis arrive, your smorgosbord of a unit beats back their infantry, but in a few minutes they come back with IFVs which are quickly taken out. >For a moment you think things are going rather well, until you see the last thing you expected to see here, left alone *wanted* to see. >"Tommi! Tell me that thing over there isn't a PRP!" you shout to Tommi while pointing at what looks like your regular BMP, except this one doesn't have the cannon the others do. >"PRP!?! Where!?!" he shouts and looks in the direction you are pointing, but the vehicle has already disappeared. >"What ever it was it isn't there anymore" Tommi says with a troubled expression on his face, the presence of a PRP would be *very* bad news for your team. >"What's PRP?" Riikka asks, you had almost forgotten about her (if that's even possible.) >"A specialised variant of BMP, an artillery reconnaissance variant to be exact" you explain. >"You mean like a tank used by guys like our team?" she asks, counting herself as one of the FO-team, which isn't that far from the truth. >"Yes, only Russians have FOs at battalion level and above, meaning if that was indeed a PRP, it can call in a lot more death on us than we can on them." >"...Anon, I hate to ask this of you-" Tommi starts to say, but you cut him off. >"You are splitting the team in two just in case, right? Which part do you want me in?" >"...Here with me and Mikko, the others will establish another FO-post at Bravo 2's position." >"Received" >"From whom?" Jussi makes a pun about what you just said. >"A gentleman never tells" you play along and force a smile, shit just got real. >As the other two leave, you three continue your deadly work, the presense of a PRP is confirmed rather quickly as indirect fire you didn't call for starts coming down on your positions, inspired by this, the enemy starts pushing forward. >As you are thanking God that you took the time to place your radio away from your FO-post you see a red flare shoot out of Bravo 2 actual's position. >"That's it, transmit "Tali!"" Tommi shouts an order & you comply. >"Transmitted!" you shout back as you get the confirmations of your message having been received. >"We are done here, retreat!" Tommi shouts just as your active earpro picks up a sound that seems to bring the world around you to a stop. >"No. Fucking. Way." you think. This isn't happening, not now. >Just as you are about to dive for cover everything goes dark. ******21.06.2018******* >You regain consciousness as Tommi finishes bandaging your head, your vision is impaired as you have lost your glasses & it seems you have blood all over your face. >"What happened?" you ask as you start wiping your face, but one of the female medics, the blonde one, stops you, having decided on doing the cleaning herself. >"A bullet scraped your head, the ruskis hit us with mortars, but we managed to hold our positions, somehow the chairforce caught wind of our minor inconvenience & a couple Hornets that apparently had nothing better to do swung by to drop some ordnance on the ruskis which caused the mortar fire to stop" Tommi explains with a smile. >"Where's Rii-" you start to ask when something fluffy in M91 cammies pounces on you while shouting at about 700 words per minute. >"Thank God you are OK, I was so worried when you were hit never do that again I swear if you get yourself killed I'll kill you!" Riikka cries out while apparently trying to crush your rib cage. >"I'm sorry I made you worry, but as you can see I'll be fine as soon as you stop trying to suffocate me!" you tell her as you rub her head. >"So, what next?" you turn to Tommi, you are still trying to collect your thoughts, but that doesn't mean you can simply sit back and not worry about what's going on around you. >"We have retreated closer to our base, the whole company is preparing to evacuate the area & all of the vehicles have been moved here and here so that we can bug out should it become necessary, our orders are to hold our positions as long as possible, that's all I know." >An hour later you find yourself back in the line alongside the militia, though now Charlie has taken Bravo's place & Bravo Alpha's place, Alpha being in reserve right now. >"I'll be damned, a bit of gravel on the asphalt *does* work as a powerful deterrent" you comment on the enemy's unwillingness to advance after finding all of the roads covered with a thick layer of gravel & few AT-mines hidden here and there. >"For now, once they realize how few mines there actually are they *will* come at us with all they've got" Tommi responds. >Almost as soon as he has finished saying that the distinct sound of Russian IFVs approaching becomes audible enough to be picked up by your hightech Peltors. >"New Old rule: do *NOT* taunt Murphy!" you growl at Tommi when you hear an unexpectedly loud boom from somewhere behind you. >You turn to look, fearing you'll see an Armata or something, only to be greeted by the sight of the front of a Leopard 2A6 followed by two more. >"You have *got* to be kidding me, where in actual fuck did those damn tank swines come from?!" you shout. >"No fucking idea, but I am glad they *did*!" Jussi replies. >As the Leos steadily push the ruski IFVs back you notice what someone has painted on the side of the turrets >"I knew the Armoured Brigade was proud of the Arrows of Lagus, but painting them on their tanks?" Tommi comments the sight >You are about to respond when the name "Lagus" catches your attention & you find yourself a full ten years younger & you change your magazine for a full one. >"HAKKAA PÄÄLLE, POHJAN POIKA!!!" you shout out as you leap forward from your position & charge after the Leos, being immediately joined by others inspired by the sight/thought of the unit flash originally used by the Armoured Division from the Continuation war. >If the ruskis weren't considering a retreat upon seeing the tanks, the sudden frontal assault by an entire platoon quickly convinces them of the wisdom of doing just that & after chasing after them for a while you all spontaneously stop all at the same time. >"Damn we are too old for this shit!" someone exclaims to your left. >"Then why did you chase after them?" you retort, knowing what the response will be. >"Says the guy who charged before anyone else & is closer to dying than anyone else!" >"I am not dying, I am merely in dire need of oxygen!" you lodge your mandatory protest. >"Aren't those one and the same?" Riikka retorts before anyone else. >"...Do I have to punish you?" you ask her menacingly. >"Wh-what are you saying you fucking pervert!" she exclaims flustered, clearly having misunderstood you (OK, ok, *semi*-misunderstood. but you *could* have meant it...) >Before you can reproach her everyone within earshot falls on the ground, dying of laughter. >"Fuck you guys, and fu-" you start to exclaim before realizing what you are about to say & stopping just in time. ("Hakkaa päälle, Pohjan Poika!" literally means "hack on/cut them down, Son of the North!", an old Finnish war cry made famous by the Hakkapeliitat or hackapels from the 30 years' war) ***(21.10.2018)*** Tired, you start going through your pockets trying to find the whole grain & chocolate biscuits you had put there for situations like this where action prevents having a proper meal. >"Hand them over" you say to Riikka after going through all your pockets twice. >"Hand over what?" she feigns ignorance. >"The biscuits I put in my pockets last night." >"I have no idea what you are talking about!" >"Then how do you explain the crumbs around your mouth?" Upon hearing this she panics, starting to wipe her face. >"...Just as I thought. Don't tell me you ate all of them already?" She doesn't say anything, instead taking two biscuits out of her pocket and handing them to you. Soon after finishing the first one the company commander comes. >"Which one of you boneheads decided it was a good idea to charge the enemy without orders?" >"Guilty" you say standing up, wondering what he's going to say. >"Should have known, as stupid as it was, thanks to your actions the enemy has pulled back to regroup, giving our reinforcements time to get into position to take charge of this area." He says, raising his voice so everyone can hear him clearly. >"So we are leaving?" you ask to confirm you understood him correctly. >"Yes, we are going to head North-North-East to patrol another area, go pack your things and fill the tank, we leave after dark!" (Several hours later, forest road in Koijärvi) >"Papa 1, Kilo 10, prepare to make way for friendlies headed in the opposite direction" company commander's voice calls the entire company on "Virve", a combination between a hand-held radio and cellphone capable of being part of multiple encrypted government and/or other communications networks simultaneously. >"Mike 1" Tommi acknowledges the message, looking at the map to see where would be a good place to let them pass, as the lead vehicle it's your job to find a suitable place for the entire company to stop without blocking the road. >"...There's a farm about a click ahead" he finally says. >"Got it." After a bit over a click of driving you spot the farm Tommi mentioned & signal a turn, slowing down to wait for others to acknowledge before making the turn. Without being ordered, you circle the yard and stop the vehicle a few meters from the driveway, ready to drive back to the road once the friendlies have passed. >"Turn off the engines. Drivers stay in the vehicles, everyone else take defensive positions!" captain orders over Virve again. You do as you are told, everyone else jumping out of the Defender while you stay, taking out your canteen to hydrate now that you have the chance. >"Finally a break, riding between the seats is killing me!" Riikka exclaims, jumping into your lap facing you & wrapping her arms around you. >"Stop it, this isn't the time nor place!" you reprimand her, as much as it pains you to do so. >"Hmmh? Is my shooter thinking dirty thoughts by any chance?" she teases you, shaking her hips in your lap. >"Yes, now stop, seriously, I need to see in front of me." >"You are no fun." She says, dejectedly turning back into her rifle form. You pick her up & place her gently back between the seats. After a while, you hear a rumbling approaching & as you look in the direction it's coming from you see a column of APCs. >"Wonderful, the road will resemble a tilled field after those guys" you curse just as Tommi comes back to the vehicle. >"On the bright side those were wheeled, "Ällis" would have been way worse" he points out, MT-LBs would have indeed left the road in a worse condition in their wake. >"Papa 1, Kilo 10, mount vehicles, let's get moving while it's still dark." >"Mike 1." Tommi acknowledges the order before signaling to the team to mount. Once every vehicle is running again the company commander's vehicle flashes "get going" and you take the lead once again. ************************** (The following day somewhere near the province border) The company had arrived at the destination almost on schedule & had finished camouflaging the vehicles right before dawn. Since there hadn't been time to both put up and camouflage the tents on top of camouflaging the vehicles the tents had been unpacked but not put up, instead the company had spread out & improvised some bivouacs and camouflaged some existing holes in the ground to act as foxholes. >"It never ceases to amaze me how lazy drivers can be" Tommi comments as he wakes you up from your nap in your Defender's trunk. >"I have standing orders to make use of every chance to rest, by taking my nap in the vehicle I have saved us all the time and effort of building me a bivouac to rest in" you make your mandatory excuse before continuing: >"Besides, as an officer you have the right to claim the other trunk seat, these are surprisingly comfy." Before Tommi can respond the field telephone in the back seat comes to life, you grab the hand set and answer it: >"Papa 3" >"Kilo 10, is Papa 1 there?" >"Captain wants to talk to you" you say while handing the phone to Tommi, who is visibly surprised by the presence of the phone. >"Papa 1" Tommi says into the phone, listens for a while before acknowledging the message and handing the hand set back to you. >"Enemy special forces are suspected to be in the area, presumably trying to get into contact with the 76th, Charlie is going to try and drive them into open while we make as much noise as possible on their flank to discourage the spetsnaz from trying to slip around the net, we leave in 10 minutes." >"Kilo 10, Foxtrot 5, point X-ray 10" you report to the commander over the radio with a mischievous smile. The FO-teams had all been driving around on Charlie's flank for two hours, everyone in the vehicles reporting their positions using made-up callsigns to make it harder for the enemy to figure out how many patrols there actually were patrolling the flank. >"Kilo 10." >"I wonder how effective this charade actually is, surely the ruskis can't be stupid enough to fall for tricks like this" Jussi comments from the trunk. >"You remember that major's lecture, spetsnaz' first priority is to try and avoid taking unnecessary risks, as long as there is any doubt about whether or not we are patrolling this area in force, they should prefer taking their chances slipping through the net rather than trying to get around it." Tommi responds while raising his hand as a sign for everyone to shut up as he makes his own report. Almost as soon as he finishes his report the distinct sound of gunfire electrifies everyone in the car. >"Cha-ie te-, contact at poi- -bec twe-" a voice shouts over the radio. >"Kilo 10 to Foxtrot, head to Romeo six and proceed to Quebeck twelve on foot, combat sign is five x-ray" commander's voice orders over the radio. Tommi grabs the cipher sheet to check what 5X stands for, finally saying: >"Combat sign is "Summa", once again, the sign is "Summa", forget that and I swear I'll kill you myself." >"Understood." >"Got it." >"10-4." >"Summa it is." Before any of you can get to even Romeo 6 the action is already over & you are left with the evacuation of the wounded, of which there are four this time, all of them from Charlie. >"I had heard all kinds of crazy stories about these guys, but damn! I never expected them to blow themselves up!" >"Luckily these ones didn't wait for our guys to get up close before pulling the pins." >"Enough of that for now, thank you." Tommi says sternly as you start the engine & start driving back to base.
