The ship sped through hyperspace, full of the clamor of cannon crews readying their weapons and pilots performing final checks on their vessels. The flight was short, in galactic terms, and within a matter of hours the flotilla decanted into realspace, far from any planet or star. In the blackness in front of them, a fuel depot serviced a Lucrehulk carrier, with swarms of vulture droids winging around it. The carrier was escorted by a pair of Rescuant-class light destroyers. The destroyers, however, were out on a patrol circle that the republic flotilla arrived inside of, between one of the Rescuants and the Lucrehulk. Immediately, the vulture droids surrounding the carrier flung themselves toward the interlopers, as the Rescuants began to ponderously swing their hulls to bear. Yadon springs into action immediately after jumping out of Hyperspace. “Fighter wings! Split into groups of 45! Group Aurek hit the depot, Group Besh, destroy that carrier! Charger C70s, you are still on point defense, divert all the power you can into your hyperdrives! Number one! Divert all auxiliary power not being used for life support, shields, or combat into getting our hyperdrive running pronto! We need to be out of here before we get stuck in!” Yadon scans the surrounding area but his main concern is the light destroyers. He bites his lip and clutches the armrests of his chair. The fighters dropped out of the hangar in a long, unbroken stream, speeding their way toward the fight. Gadreel’s and Longstar’s Chargers flew alongside, their turbolaser batteries opening up on the oncoming fighter waves to blunt their assault. The remaining Chargers fanned out, attempting to cover as much space in laser fire as possible as the Rescuant fighter compliments began to close from behind. The assault fighter squadrons proceeded rapidly under the aegis of the Charger assault, already beginning to strike at the fuel depot. Stray shots against the Lucrehulk showed their shields had already been raised. The fighters pressing the Acclamator approached fast, and a call came from Captain Duann: “Sir, they’re closing up fast on us! We’ll not be able to hold this position, not with that destroyer on us!” And indeed, the Rescuant behind them was near to bringing the bow cannon into line with the Judicator. The far one, however, seemed to be having inexplicable difficulties navigating around the firefight at the depot for a clear shot. A careless maneuver on its part opened it up for an opportunistic salvo from several of the fighters, causing an explosion visible even from the Judicator bridge. Yadon knew the cannons would annihilate the smaller ships, it couldn't be had. “Everyone! Use Judicator for cover, when your hyperspace drives are fully charged, give me a message that you are ready!” Ruellan saw the enemy light destroyer wounded by the fighters, and new that the lapse in their shields was a perfect time to break their back. “Target that wounded destroyer! Fire two anti-ship missiles into it, fighters, focus on the depot and the carrier, once you have squeezed off all your missiles, break it back to the ship!” The other, undamaged Rescuant was a big problem, but Yadon would have to get out of the way, his Captains knew to stay behind him. He can take the blows. “Helmsman! Raise 30 degrees and fast! Lets hope the shields hold!” The huge torpedoes blasted from the Acclamator with an audible thumping, speeding across the battlespace and slamming into the wounded vessel. Its failing shields flashed and vanished, and the resulting explosions tore the ship in two. The explosion, so near the ailing fuel depot, caused the tanks to erupt. Despite this close explosion and the fighters harrying it, the Lucrehulk’s shields held strong as it began to pull away from the battle. Several republic fighters were tragically caught in the blast from the depot, and others fell to the vultures despite valiant efforts from the Chargers. A string of ready reports sounded in the Judicator’s bridge as the fighters desperately sped back toward the waiting hangar. The pitch of the deck changed noticeably under Ruellan’s feet, the speed of their emergency maneuver overcoming the inertial dampeners slightly. The Judicator’s cannons harried the pursuing Rescuant, which was ever so slightly too slow to bring its cannons to bear immediately. “Captain!” The OPSO called, “Fighters will be aboard in thirty seconds, all vessels reporting ready for hyper!” Screamed Lt. McClane “Everyone get out of here! Ill join you back at base in a moment! Number one, status on our Hyperdrive?” Yadon looked over into space at the enemy light destroyer and sneered. Bastard. Yadon wouldnt have it. “Reload our torpedoes and give the carrier a going away present! As soon as our fighters are aboard we will jump out of here!” “Hyperdrive ready, sir.” Came the reply. The helmsman slid the bow to starboard and down, pivoting the ship to try to angle the dorsal structure to the destroyer while protecting the hangar. Aligned better, the dorsal turbolaser batteries made a strong salvo against the destroyer as a full brace of torpedoes was fired at the retreating carrier. The Rescuant weathered the Judicator’s fire, finally bringing its cannon into line for a salvo. It immediately unloaded its cannon into the Judicator, causing a resounding vibration through the deck, followed by a blaring alarm. “Hull breach, aft engineering!” the OPSO shouted, “Damage control teams on site. No system damage noted.” “Fighters aboard,” said the first officer in a calm tone, “engaging hyperdrive.” As the stars jumped into streaks, Yadon caught a final view of the carrier - rocked by torpedo impacts, but still intact. “Jump complete, Captain.” The first officer checked his repeater display as the Judicator met with the Chargers, at the rendezvous a few light-minutes away. “Fighter squadrons took the heaviest losses, group Aurek lost two percent with three percent damaged but repairable, besh suffered fourteen percent casualties with a further thirty percent damaged. Commander Duann and Commander Gadreel have minor damage, but none of our repairs should take more than a day at the fleet station.” “Damn it” Yadon mutters under his breath. He then presses the button to hail his engineering officer to check if she was okay. “Is everything alright down there? Damage Report!” Afterwards, Yadon springs from his chair and called Terrace over. “We are going to the hangers, I want to thank the men personally.” He then turned to Number One. “Number One, send a message out that we are going home to the station. We will need to replenish our aircraft and make repairs before we try something like that again.” Yadon then proceeds out of the Bridge and down to the hangar area. Terrace can see a look of supreme dissatisfaction with himself.
