>"Hey, Anon. Wake up, it's your shift" a voice and shake breaks you from your sleep >you blink your eyes a few times before grabbing your M16 and poking your head up over the edge of your foxhole >It takes you a bit but in a little bit you are soon able to make out the shapes of trees and landmarks along a stretch of the West German border >across it is the mass of Soviet and Pact forces dying to go toe to toe with the NATO forces >you turn your head to the left and attempt to make out the shape of a Bradley IFV hidden in the woods >it's one of the newer toys that have been deployed to West Germany >To be frank it's a major upgrade to the M113s that you were trained with a few years back >Suddenly to your rear you hear the sound of someone trying to move quickly and silently at the same time >You turn to see a man in similar gear flop down next to your foxhole >"All quiet private?" the voice of Staff Sergeant Hayes says in a hushed whisper while scanning the horizon "All's quiet sergeant" you reply in a similar volume >"Hmm, LT said there was something big coming. Don't know what, but be on alert" he continues before standing up and continuing down the line, spreading the news to the rest of the squad >After an unknown amount of time passes with NCOs scampering between the foxhole and vehicles, the sky begins to turn lighter > you wake up your battle buddy, Private Lemar and tell him what SSgt Hayes told you >"The fuck does, 'somethings big is coming' mean? We don't have them big wargames for another couple months" Lemar grumbles under his breath "I know just as much as you do man, stop bitc-" you say but are interrupted by the sound of approaching jet engines >As you look up to try to spot the aircraft an EF-111 Ravens fly in at high speed low over the ground followed by a pair F-4s >As they disappear into Eastern Germany you see one of the F-4s let fly a missile that goes towards an unknown target on the ground >As you and Lemar and dumbfounded whatching the planes fly away the voice of SSgt Hayes breaks you out of your trance >"Hey dickheads, listen up. Word just came down from the higher ups, We're at war with the ruskies. This ain't a fucking joke this is the real deal. Get ready for them and remember your training" He says before running down the line again >Private Lemar looks at you with a dumbfounded look >"Sheit he's not serious right? There's no way we could be at war" he says, his voice full of confusion >he's answered by a distant rumbling that could only mean one thing >Artillery, and lots of it >Multiple yells of some form of "TAKE COVER" can be heard before the mass concussion of multiple howitzer shells impact the hill and surrounding area >You and Lemar try to make yourselves as small and as deep in the foxhole as you can >The sound and concussion of the artillery fire keeps you from thinking, all you want is for it to stop >After a few minutes the artillery lets up and begins moving on further into West Germany, trying to take out the rear echelon support units >"WHO'S STILL UP?" you hear through the ringing and raise your head above the foxhole perimeter and scan the area >the peaceful hill the platoon you're part of was deployed on now looks like the moon surface if it had trees here and there and multiple fires >off to the right one of the Companies ITVs is flipped on to its side, a dead crewman laying next to it >the ringing in your ears stop and you now hear the yelling of the NCOs and alive, the screams of the wounded, and the distant sounds of battle >"LOOK ALIVE LADIES, RECON ELEMENTS TELL US WE GOT A MRR COMING OUR WAY! BE READY TO FIGHT!" the voice of 2nd Lieutenant Bartlett yells out as he runs along the perimeter >" CHECK YOUR AMMO, DRAGON TEAMS GET READY IF THEY GET CLOSE! I WANT EVERYTHING WE PLANNED IN PLACE" he continues before entering the FISTV vehicle >Soon over the opposite hill you start seeing movement >you identify one BRDM-2 scout vehicle, which after a little bit falls back over the hill again >A minute later a formation of 8 T-72s in a wedge formation followed by three platoons of BTRs comes up and over the ridge >"They must think the artillery wiped us out, the poor bastards" Lemar says as he loads a grenade into his under barrel M203 Grenade launcher. >As the soviet formations get closer you hear the whizzing sound of artillery flying overhead >Explosions light up the formation with high explosives and cluster munitions, which take out a good amount of the tanks and a few BTRs > As the artillery goes off, the tank platoon off somewhere to the left fires off a volley of 105mm shells >All but one hit, with one hit causing a T-72s turret to pop off into the air as the ammunition detonates >the few surviving tanks return fire to minimal effect and they are soon destroyed >You see a TOW missile fly out from a nearby Bradley that flies towards a BTR and impacts it, causing it to brew up in flames >Infantry inside of it spill out, many of them on fire and fall around the now dead BTR >The unmistakable KACHUNKing sound of a nearby M2 fills your ears and red hot traces fly towards the disabled BTR, tearing through anything unfortunate enough to be caught by the rounds >Only a few minutes later cease fire is called and the world of fire, smoke, and bullets is now strangely silent >The formation of soviet vehicles has been destroyed, with their infantry either dead or retreating "We, we did it. We fought them off" you say, having not fired a shot the entire time. >"I wouldn't get our hopes up just yet, Ivans got a lot of tanks to throw at us" Lemar says back to you >If that was a cue for Ivan, a larger formation appears over the ridge and begins advancing towards your units position >"Shit, this must be the MRR they told us about. That first one must have been their advanced guard" Lemar says >Tank guns begin to bark and TOW launchers from both Bradleys and IFVs begin streaking towards their targets >Even though they're doing their job, it's not enough and the Soviet vehicles keep getting closer >CHUM CHUM CHUM, the bradley off to your left opens up with a burst from its Bushmaster on a BTR, stopping the vehicle in its tracks >"BACK BLAST CLEAR" you hear from another fighting position before the whoosh and the constant "POP" of a Dragon missile in flight >The missile screams towards a T-72 but impacts the ground in front of it >A second missile from another emplacement streaks towards it moments later and finds its mark, causing the tank to go up like a roman candle >A few BTRs that haven't been hit stop, and soviet infantry spill out and begin firing at friendly positions >you line up your sights on a group of Russians and fire off a burst >One pitches forwards onto the ground while the other flop to the ground and begin firing at your position >"FUCK! YOU JUST HAD TO PISS THEM OFF DIDN'T YA" Lemar says as he ducks down with you >He stands back up and fires the Grenade which impacts the group that were firing at you, causing the return to fire to be substantially lighter than before >the battle goes on with Soviet forces continuing to attempt to push forward be with no avail >What remains of the force retreats to the ridge line and begins digging in >The field between your units position and theirs is covered in knocked out armor and vehicles >the moans of the wounded and the crackle of the grass and ammunition fires are all that can be heard >You slump back into your fighting hole, exhausted from the fight >Just like before hell was unleashed Hayes sticks his head into the hole >"Get your shit and get to a vehicle, we're pulling back. Soviets punched through other sectors of the line and Command is worried we'd get cut off" he says before crawling away >You grab your pack that was sitting in the hole and scamper out of it >All around you are men coming out of their own holes, some lightly wounded and some like you completely fine >You look for a vehicle to get in, but all you can see in the smoke is what remains of the Bradley that was to your left >Once a a fighting machine that was designed to be able to take on most threats is now a charred burnt out metal husk >You stumble through the smoke before spotting a live one and with Lemar enter it >A few more soldiers enter before the hatch is closed and the engine comes to life, driving off somewhere deeper into West Germany to hopefully stop the Russians there >That is if they could be stopped
