The man appeared in my den. A meal at my door. Well, I was glad. No need to hunt. The man looked shocked and heard my grumbling as my eyes hardened on him. He tried to run but he lacked my sight. Still, the best meat is meat that runs. So with old dirt under my paws, I start to chase the man with glee. No ..please… The man ran stumbling and tripping in the darkness as I approached. He frantically screamed and struggled to breathe. Amusing. His breath was sweet, as he wasted it on foolish attempts to cry for help in a language I did not know. He was not of my world. No, he had a strange bag and even stranger clothes. Different from my other prey who wandered into this place. I would learn once I had eaten him. I was gaining on the man as he rushed to a cellar room that was carved to a cave opening. A room I’ve never entered. I know here…. The man ran with the strange bag and pushed through a worn door into the old broken cell. Molded barrels laid abandoned as I entered. I leaped at the man, pushing him to the ground. He fell away from me kicking and squirming. Still too slow. I clasped one of his heels in my teeth as he pulled out a blade. It was a dull, black metal with a large curved edge. The man swung the blade wildly as he struggled to crawl back. Then I pushed the man onto his back. He landed dazed, but still screamed as he tried to stab me. His last mistake. Should have waited… The man shrieked as I bit into his flesh. It was good. The red meat of this strange man tasted different, smokey even. One of the man's arms flailed about searching for a weapon and grasped a hilt of something. Something I recognized. Where did I know that from...? My sword…. I raised my gore-smeared snout as I looked around for the voice I heard. The man saw his chance and plunged the broken blade into my chest, and I felt death’s grip. I jumped back onto the man biting into his arm. If I couldn't eat him, I would take him with me. He screamed as he slammed the blade further into my stomach, but his grip weakened. The man fell limp as I stood over him, shaking but alive. I lived and took my foe with me. Victory was mine. Then I heard it. Level up! User level 2. No… I tried to pull away from the man, but my front paws had already fused into his chest. My back legs scraped against the cold floor in an attempt to cling to something, anything. It was too late. My teeth were as low as the man's arms as I continued to pull away. My jaw was then dragged to his chest as it was consumed by an unknown pull. As I was swallowed into the man, I glanced at a light in the center of the room. I knew that light. I made that lìght. It started at my dead-end job. I was a minimum wage high school dropout with no real prospects, and I even started to put on some pounds. Then I felt it. It was a small, almost minuscule feeling. But it was there nonetheless: the feeling of being watched. I couldn't find where or who it came from, but I knew I was being watched. And I knew I needed to get ready. Fighting my paranoia I picked up more shifts at work to save up the cash. I stocked up on foodstuffs, water, and medicine. Hell, if I wasn't working, I was scouring the shelves of a local supermarket shopping like Armageddon was around the corner. But the feeling only got worse. I felt like I was being watched even in my own home. So I prepped even harder. I got manuals and books, blades, and large duffel bags filled to the brim with pre-packed survival gear. I went on runs and did exercises with some of the gear I'd bought just to shed off the pounds, even as the feeling drew closer. I then finally quit my job, taking all the savings and supplies I'd gathered to a rundown warehouse that I was renting off the books from some old man in town. I'm sure the past me would have taken one look at me now and shaken his head, calling me a doomsday wackjob. I thought the same too, even as I pushed open the door to the warehouse. But as I was about to set down the last of the duffle bags, I heard it. In my head. “Your day of reckoning is nigh, Sam Argus. For avoiding your fated death, you shall be cast into a new realm. Prove yourself worthy, and bountiful powers shall await you. But know this: you shall not be saved from death again.” “What the fu-“ I started as my vision faded to darkness. The tiled floor under my feet gave way to grass as I sat up and took in the new area I woke up in. It was a musty, damp place with strong earthy smells that were overpowering. At the very least, the light shining down from the top of the pit I found myself in let me see some of my new environment. I coughed and stumbled to my feet. I felt something snap underneath my left boot, and I looked to see... a text box beside it. Leftover bone, no use to the user. “The hell is that?” I snorted as I started to panic. This was bullshit, it made no fucking sense. Was this some kinda punishment by God or something, or some sick joke by some cosmic horror? As these thoughts raced through my mind I heard a growl behind me. It was a low, guttural sound, with a mix of a human and a dog. A raw disgusting smell like rotting corpses met my nose as a beast emerged from the darkness. I just started running in the dark. I ran, stumbling over loose dirt, random rocks, and stalactites as I struggled to get away from whatever had picked up my scent. I was going to get out of there. I was going to live, I had to! The large beast galloping behind me said otherwise. As I ran I screamed “Help me! Oh God, help!” My pleas for help echoed off the cave walls with no response. I had to find some way to escape. As I ran I saw an old door, a wooden weak thing slapped into the cave wall. As I ran to this strange door the text reappeared. Safe room. Time until capture: 8 seconds. WARNING: Unknown Threat approaching. Safe room stats: Warding level 1, Healing level 4, Protection level 1. The door's text confused me, but I didn't have time to think. I rammed into the door, slamming through its weak wood and rusted frame. But that was my mistake. The room was a dead end, and I blew the only door right off its hinges. Right behind me, something large and black leaped through the opening. Crap. It was time for a fight, but I was not ready. It was kicked off with my purser jumping into the room with me. I finally got a look at what had been chasing me ; a large black dog made by satan for the vilest fucks. The “dog” had an elongated snout with deformed teeth bulging from its mouth as clear saliva dripped from its twisted maw. It moved closer to me, its twisted strong muscles dragging chains protruding from its body along the ground. Its long mangy limbs pawed the ground as it began to growl. It leered at me with misshapen eyes like pools of red blood as it readied itself. I reached into my bag, grabbed my machete, and shouted as it leaped at me. I wildly swung at the dog as it fell onto me, the attack narrowly nicking its ear as I was thrown to the floor. I gasped for air as the dog loomed over me, its growl replaced with a near laughing yip. I could only swing a few more times before the dog bit down on my chest. Bone met bone as the dog’s teeth caught my ribcage, blood erupting from the new wounds all the while. I screamed. I screamed louder than I thought I ever could. Time seemed to slow. There I realized I was going to die. I was going to die painfully and alone in some dank hole by one of satan’s fucked up pugs. Screw that. He’s coming with me. I tried to reach for something in the darkness, anything. My hand fell upon the hilt of an old sword. Right as it did, something drew the beast’s attention away. That was it, my one chance.. I grabbed the broken sword and stabbed it into the dog’s underbelly. Its eyes widened and it resumed its attack, but I wasn’t done yet. Biting back the pain I pulled the sword out and tried to gut the beast. I was halfway through its stomach when my hand lost its strength, and I began to grow cold. As my breaths slowed and my vision began to blur, I could only utter two words. “Fucking bullshit…” But text flashed by my eyes with an annoying guitar rift like a knock-off rpg. The bite marks it had ripped into me earlier began to glow as the hound struggled against some force that drew it towards me. I felt its fur under my skin. I could see it writhing, peeking occasionally through my wounds as it sank like sand in a jar of water. I started coughing as pain lashed across my body. I couldn't take this, it was too much. I would find the bastard who dragged me here and I would give him a piece of my mind. I screamed to God, screamed to friends and family, screamed to whatever came to mind as I finally passed out, cursing into the dark abyss. "Well here I was, thinking you were going to die, Struggle on, Argus Sam, I cannot wait to see what happens next."
