(((this was a contest entry for fan/k/sia I submitted. Enjoy.))) Décimo Segundo Rg. Infantaria de Montanha Destaque Anti-Aéreo ‘Charutos’ Minas Gerais Mountains “K”-DAY +51 1700 ‘BRT’ God bless. I don’t know how we didn’t buy more of these. The 9K38 Igla, or more known as ‘cigar’ in my unit, was one of the only good things the PT government ever did to our forces. It is a beautiful piece of russian engineering, from the simple sight systems to the locking beep. Everything sounds… *clean*, something not really associated with soviet-derived systems. When it was bought, it did quite a bit of ruckus. Some jews were mad that our government didn’t buy mid-range launchers from Israel, and opted to pay Russia's debt with a bunch of old free launchers. Let me tell you, it isn’t as bad as people make it to be. I’m currently on a beautiful hill, outlooking some rural areas. I wish I could get a photo, but you know how it goes, polaroids got phased out of use far before my time. Gentle hills cover the landscape all the way to a beautiful rocky mountain chain that goes down to são paulo. If my dad knew I'd be in such beautiful places, guess he would’ve signed in too. Me and my squadron are attached to a bunch of hardcore mountainmen from the region- the 12th. Since the bullshit happened, we have been waiting for a chance to try our guns at a new kind of air threat- dragons. The brief contact we had with the divisions to the north- mainly in the amazon forest air wings- detailed how beautiful flying beings terrorized the poor blackhawks up there. There’s even a rumor a hind dogfighted one- but I guess that’s fake. Luckily for me, and probably a panicking sentiment for the men around me, we have been assigned to finally take down one of those beasts. There’s a big, pale wyvern that has been terro- “Command to Spear. Command to Spear, do you read?” Sorry for that, I need to pick up the radio. See you later, mom. ‘Spear to command, we read you, over.’ “Good to hear you, spear. We need you operational.” ‘Just funnel in the task command. The team’s all ready.’ “We have one of the big guys- the one you know, chasing one of our panthers. We’ve redirected the helicopter to your location, incoming from bearing 155.” ‘Aye, no need to say the rest, command. We’ll take care of him’ I put down the radio, and quickly get the others to ready up ‘06! GET ON THE 40!’ “YES SIR!” ‘RODRIGO, BRING ME THE SMOKES. YOU ALL KNOW THE DRILL.’ The soldiers all scramble from their jeeps and tents, preparing equipment for contact. Our 40mm, an old Bofors that command didn’t find any other use in other units, is a beast. There’s nobody more competent to gun it than the recruit 06, although he’s a dumbass. “SIR, PANTERA’S VISUAL. BEARING 155, COMING OVER THE HILL” I get on the back of one of the trucks, with rodrigo behind me holding the IGLA. The beautiful piece of aircraft engineering passes over one of the mountains far away, heading straight to our encampment, with the dragon in a relatively short pursuit of the helicopter. ‘YURI, THROW A BLUE SMOKE, SIGNAL TO OUR BOYS UP THERE.’ With a few pops, a blue smoke rises up from one of the tents, sealing the ambush. Standard Anti-Dragon strategies either include overwhelming fire with autocannons, or the hottest way: Luring their breath. IGLA Launchers cannot lock onto a dragon’s body- their outside temperature is too low for the seekers to acquire and guide. But, we can use their biggest weapon against them: Their breath. Our 40mm is inaccurate, but it’ll sure startle the sucker to open his mouth wide open for us. The helicopter finally makes it within 5km- the max range of our gun. The flyboys are already instructed on what to do, so they fly low. The dragon’s bigger and more clumsy body can’t fly so low without risking a good old wood slap, so he’s forced to stay above. And that’s exactly what he does. ‘06, SENTA O DEDO CARALHO!’ And with that, hell lets loose. The thundering sounds of the autocannon drow out any sense out of the beast, and after some long bursts a single shell hits jackpot- directly at its belly. It starts roaring, spitting hot fumes from it’s lungs and preparing it’s signature fire breath. BZZZZZZZZZZZZ… BEEEEP! I depress the trigger, the power of the rocket igniting almost sending me off-balance. The magnificent missile flies directly at it’s foe, and strikes a direct hit. The beast falls to the ground like a sack of potatoes, and the entire outpost erupts in joy ‘Command, Command, this is Spear. Scratch one.’ “Nice one, spear! Get ready for future assignments.”
