K-day + 18 | 2nd/8th Aviation group “Potti Squadron” | Porto Velho city, Amazon, Western border | I sit inside the troop compartment of my MI-35 helicopter drinking coffee from my old mug. The humid air coming from the hot tarmac mixed with the jungle heat permeates the atmosphere. The echoes of countless firefights can be heard in the distance, it’s been around three weeks since this whole thing happened. I flew more sorties than I can count, I killed four dragons with my mighty crocodile along with a big number of other flying creatures that will forever haunt my nightmares. But no matter how many we killed, they kept advancing, we lost contact with the Bolivian government and Brazil can’t help us anymore. The government has fallen but not before issuing the war mobilization plan and giving orders to fight. “Every able Brazilian will be a rifleman” Those words resonated throughout the whole country, and now we became a fortress under siege. The rest of the country is a big incognita. Our little city is now under command of Moura, the air force colonel responsible for the air base. He calls himself the “Mayor”. While we were out trying to clear the skies the enemy crept into our city, we managed to hold on to key points in the city but the battle has been going on for some days and we’re running out of options and ammo. And I just ran out of coffee… the troop doors are open, outside I can see men running around, trying to resupply and refuel our helicopters. Suddenly an average height white guy wearing a pilot jumpsuit and holding a helmet under his arm runs up to the door I was looking out of, that’s my co-pilot, Piolho. “What the fuck are you doing Rol’, the refuel is almost done and command gave us a full load of rockets, get in the cockpit before we lose the battle!” Piolho frantically yaked as he slapped against the fuselage. “Sit down and breathe Piolho, the battle isn’t going anywhere, do a check on the weapons and make sure the ground boys set the rockets to fire the way we like it.” I responded in a calm tone as I stood up and walked out of the cramped troop compartment. The super tucanos from the Griffon squadron were taking off as I stepped out of my helicopter, they were loaded to bear in rockets and pods. “Send ‘em back to hell Griffons!” I yelled out towards the screaming turbo-props. Out in the distance i heard helicopters rotors approaching, i looked towards it and i could see the gorgeous war machines, the Hind helicopters, two of them coming closer and closer to the ground the grass and air around them danced and moved as they came closer and landed like beautiful swans while the ground crews moved towards them like ants. “Piolho! let’s go, get in the cockpit, we're out!” I yelled out to Piolho who was looking towards the landing helicopters while the ground crew disconnected the fuel hose and began moving their equipment out of the way. I closed the troop doors and made my way to the pilot seat. On top of my seat was my trusty helmet, I donned the helmet and turned the radio on, I closed the car-like doors and started turning the APU, engines and equipment on. I heard an explosion coming from the back of the helicopter and began to feel the vibrations of the engines and the loud droning sound of the twin Klimov engines. “Rol, here comes the black feet.” Piolho warned me as a group of soldiers began to move towards the helicopters, FALs in hand and backpacks loaded with ammo and whatever else they would need. One of the soldiers, the one with the fanciest epaulets, quickly moved up and entered the helicopter, his boots striking the surface with surprising impact. “Lieutenant Emilio, third company, second platoon, we need a ride to strongpoint Delta to regroup with our guys, command advised me that’s your sector.” He said through the small corridor-like opening that connects the pilot to the troop compartment. “Make yourself at home, 10 men by helicopter and make sure not to leave anything in my machine… put your machine gunners on the windows.” I told him as I set the right frequency on my radio. “Potti 2 to tower, we’re taking elements from the third company second platoon with us, we’ll be dropping them off at strongpoint delta” I said over the radio as the Lieutenant moved to the opened door and began directing his squads to board Potti 2 and Potti 3, my wingman. “Tower to Potti 2 and 3, we copy that, you’re cleared to takeoff, we have confirmed hostile elements in the air, no big dragons yet. Vai com Deus.” A female voice said through the radio. “Roger that tower, love you.” I responded in a sarcastic tone. The troop doors were opened and men began to cram inside, to say it was like a tuna can would be an understatement. “Potti 3, your sack of shit come in.” I said over to the radio. “Talk up, asshole , I ain't hearing you” The voice of Arnaldo, pilot of Potti 3, sounded in my ears. “Get that limp dick of yours out of your ears and maybe you will, drop these guys off at strongpoint delta and keep an eye out for any flying critters, take off when i give the signal, over.” I responded in an equal tone. “Drop off the greenies at strongpoint Delta and try not to die to some flying goat, I copy, over.” Arnaldo said, in a more serious tone. The troop doors were closed. “That’s everyone, you can go.” the Lieutenant said while tapping my shoulder. “Potti 3, take off, don’t waste ammo.” I said over the radio as I put more power in the collective and began to hover over the tarmac, the engine got louder and louder as I began to yank it towards the south. “Care if I turn on some music?” Piolho asked through the intercom “As long as it isn’t some trash shit you heard at a bar.” I answered while the helicopter gained altitude. “Ey don’t worry, it’s the official army radio, you know i don’t listen to trash.” Piolho said as I began hearing some old Samba through the multiple surround sound systems installed in the helicopter (don’t tell the higher ups). The music was already ending when we tuned in. “Welcome to Olive green radio, green sign to good music, live from Manaus, it’s now 14 hours.” A robotic toned female said over the radio. “Fighting around Manaus is fierce but the 12th region assures all that the city will not be cut off from the rest of the country.” she stopped for a moment, i could feel a tone change in her voice. “Good luck to all warriors in the frontline, I'll leave you to the sound of Judas Priest: Turbo Lover.” She finished while https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFgADZk4jDA began to play through the radio. The green amazon jungle dominated the view, the concrete city ahead of me was small, few buildings taller than 4 stories, dirt roads decorated it’s limits, to my right the majestic brown river Madeira. an imposing bridge dominated the view ahead as black smoke rises from multiple points around it. I yanked the helicopter nose’s forward and began to move towards the strongpoint delta. It was an old walled pre-military highschool compound now turned into an outpost. I can see smoke rising from around it, a large horde is enveloping it trying to push their way into the walls. It must be a nightmare for the guys there, but for me it looks like a bunch of ants converging for dinner. “Potti 3, eyes on Strongpoint Delta, let’s circle it, you go first, over.” I commanded Arnaldo. “Good old circle of death, watch over my ass. out.” Arnaldo responded, Our helicopters began moving towards the strongpoint, unharmed by the chaos going down in the city, like birds of prey. Our electric eyes made sure to register everything in an apathetic gaze. The Klimov engines screamed as our duo flew through the black smoke of the dying city, explosions echoed like laughter as we approached our objective. We began to circle over our prey, green smoke began rising from the rooftops, a desperate call for help from an about to be overrun position. Potti 3 began to dive down, spraying rockets as he did, each rocket leaving short clouds of grey smoke as it left the tube then disappearing amid the air just to impact the ground in a show of fiery vengeance. I touched a button and displayed a thermal image of Piolho’s gun camera. Close to the walls of the School compound I could see an enormous mass composed of individual moving black points be obliterated by bright explosions that looked like waves in a calm lake. Potti 3 swiveled graciously to the side as it’s autocannon fired hysterically into the mass of undead, bright tracers impacting the black dots, leaving long trails of liquid pouring down on the ground. Potti 3 flew dangerously close to the ground, using buildings as cover, using its own rotors much like a banshee would use it’s voice. The green smoke mixed with the black smoke, the blood mixed with the ground, and the time for me to join in the fun came. I turned my nose down and aimed to the center of the remaining mass. I have three rocket pods and one 23mm gun pod. The G-force began to strike me, the men in the troop compartment began to scream as they held on to whatever they could for dear life. I pressed the trigger and rockets began flying out of my tubes, I held down a different trigger and my gunpod started to sing. I could feel the vibrations as the 23mm gast gun began to fire and the enemy began to die. At the last moment, I turned the nose up and began circling the compound much like Arnaldo did before. “I see nothing but stragglers, the survivors are on top of the roofs” Piolho said. “Affirmative” I nodded. “Potti 2 to Potti 3, cover me while I land the troops, try not to make your guys puke on the carpet” I said over the radio as I approached one of the flat open rooftops of an administrative building inside the compound. “These guys are hard to make puke, you know what they feed them, anyhow. Ammo situation is good, still got more than half of the rockets and half of the 23mm.” Arnaldo said over the radio as I began to hover above the building. “Out of my chopper!” I yelled out to the lieutenant and his troops in the compartment. They responded immediately by opening the doors, the pointmen stopping for a short moment to look down before jumping off onto the roof. “Emergency! fucking flying demons coming towards me here, they look like fucking gargoyles, taking evasive action.” Arnaldo screamed over the radio. “G-gargoyles?!” Piolho exclamed over the intercom. “I’m the last one!” The Lieutenant yelled out before jumping out of my helicopter. “Oh shit it’s coming!” Piolho screamed, I looked towards the source of the commotion and saw a black humanoid with bat-like wings and red eyes. It was diving towards us, it’s mouth opened to show a multitude of fang-like teeth. “No he won’t!” I yelled out as I pumped more power into the collective making the engine roar in a violent tone. We got altitude fast, the gargoyle tried to dodge but his right wing catched the rotor blade, the machine sliced his wing in less than a second, shreds of black followed the flightless beast as it spiraled down towards the concrete floor of the compound below. . The helicopter was unstable for a second before I regained full control. I looked towards Potti 3, he was being pursued by three of the damn things. “Arnaldo needs our help,” Piolho said as I pressed a button that automatically closed the compartment doors. “I know” I replied calmly as I moved the helicopter nose towards Potti 3. “Senta a Pua!” I shouted. The 23mm gast cannon fired a long burst towards the enemies in pursuit, a barrage of fire ripped them apart one by one in a menagerie of tracer and blood. The vibrations of the firing reverberated throughout the cockpit for a few moments after the last round. “Potti-3 you’re clear, drop off the men and let’s finish this fight before the city’s gone” I said over the radio as I began gaining altitude. The city was in utter chaos, tracer fire raged through the streets as soldiers did their best to maneuver among the ruined desolated streets while mutants and monsters of all sizes prowled those same streets. Potti 3 moved towards the strongpoint delta hovering over the same roof I used, the compartment's doors opened and men began jumping out of it while I circled around the strongpoint providing security. “Infantry has been dropped off, gaining altitude.” Arnaldo said over the radio as I looked towards the big bridge over the river, the center of the fiercest fight, our best troops are there making themselves bait, wave upon wave of monsters stumble their way towards them, while the strongpoints and air support does their best at clearing their respective sectors of stragglers. “Roger that, move towards the bridge, over.” I said as a static droning sound began coming from the radio. The skies began moving, moving like water being drained and as it was being drained it began turning a shade of light purple, on the horizon I could still see the blue sky but above me this purple hue began to dominate. My vision turned white for a moment as the helicopter shook violently, a few moments later my ears were assaulted by an overwhelming boom sound, it was like a howitzer fired right beside the helicopter. My radio began to screech louder, as my vision came back, the purple sky was dominating my view. I quickly turned the helicopter to the left in a single violent motion, as bolts of lightning began to fill the air around us, I had to close my eyes while my ears rang loudly and the helicopter shaked. “Rol get us out of here!” Piolho screamed. “We’ll have to ride the lightning!” I screamed back as I pointed the helicopter down and began diving towards the apartment buildings. The helicopter shakes violently as the rotors accelerate further, I pull the helicopter up and begin guiding it through the buildings while I lose more and more altitude until I'm just a few meters above the houses around me. the bolts of lightning are hitting the tall metallic post along the streets and buildings instead of the helicopter. “Contacts 12 o’clock, 75 meters, no scratch that, we are surrounded!” Piolho yelled through the intercom while I tried my best to use the ground effect to keep us hovering. “Why are you yelling this!? FIRE!” I yelled in a similar tone while I tried to fix the radio by changing frequencies back and forth. The Gast cannon began doing it’s job, I saw the tracers around me hitting all kinds of targets, while I accelerated the helicopter towards the bridge. Spears and arrows bounced off my chopper in the rare instances they managed to connect to the fuselage, the goblins and orcs that saw the helicopter coming ran screaming, even the biggest of orcs didn’t dare to stare down the rotor-winged beast. “Potti-3 come in… i said come in Goddamnit” I yelled over the now (hopefully) fixed radio. “We (screech)... verrun, need support!” A ragged voice sounded through the electric screeches of the radio, it was Arnaldo. “Fuck, Copy that, I’m coming don’t you dare die on me.” I said over the radio as I turned the helicopter again, now towards the last position of Potti-3, a cloud of black smoke and flames not far away from the lightning storm that threatened to bring me down, seems Potti-3 wasn’t so lucky. The Super tucanos began bombing the areas infront of me, they came down like eagles firing their machineguns and cannons while dropping their Jdam bombs. I could see the visible shockwave of each bomber as they hit their marks and the planes turned up. I can see it, a downed HIND, it’s nose inside an old brick house, it’s tail sticking out the tail rotor spinning lazily while orcs move up to assault their position. I approached steadily as the gast cannon and my gunpod fired in bursts around the house, turning the orcs into crimson mush. The remaining orcs began to disperse, fleeing from my sight, some threw spears my way before turning their backs and running through the houses and fences.
