Canonicity: "To Be Decided" but likely to be canon, since this lines up with most stories. In short: fairies are excitable, tiny elves who can fly that have an addiction to brass, beef jerky, and friendly contact. Arguably the best companions anyone could ever have. Biology: fairies have a tiny, diminutive stature, typically reaching only between 4-6 inches tall, however, this height might vary between individuals. A fairies appearance seems to look like an elf, the main differences being the pair of very colorful, glassy butterfly-like wings that sprout from their back, and sharp, needle-like teeth. A fairies primary method of transportation is flight, and they loathe walking any “long” distances. A fairy’s metabolism is very quick, often being compared to that of a hummingbird. Their diet is largely carnivorous, with fairies preferring meet to any other food, save for sugary substances. Their ravenous nature allows them to eat nearly three times their body weight in a single sitting and still be able to fly. It is rumored that a roving pack of fairies could eat a grown man alive in only three minutes. however, no one has witnessed this feat, and fairies always say that it is a lie if it is brought up. The reproductive cycle of a fairy is lunar based, resulting in most fairies going into heat around the same time. There tends to be more females in the fairy race than males. This is considered to be a natural adaption to keep the fairy population high due to the amount of fairy that tend to run off on adventures (see behavior section below) An interesting note about fairies is their sense of smell. While not particularly “strong” like that of a wolf or dog, a fairies nose is sensitive to the scents of people and certain objects. Much like most creatures, a fairy can tell the difference between a fairy of its own family/clan, and those of an outsider. Just like all creatures, a fairy has a certain amount of innate magic within them. However, unlike most creatures, fairies have the highest amount of magic in them for their body weight ratio. It is said that a single fairy has three times the amount of magic in it than that of an ancient high elf sorcerer. For comparison, if a human had that amount of magic in them they would immediately burst into ethereal flames as their body failed to keep the magical energy in check. Most of a fairies magic is “stored” in its wings, (upwards of 50%), often making fairy wings a hotly wanted item on the black market for use in illegal spells and black magic. One of the key parts of fairy biology is their addiction to the alloy metal known as brass. While most forms of the metal (doorknobs, pipes, cutlery) might give the fairies a light “buzz” akin to a sugar rush or caffeine high, it is most effective when in the form of a bullet casing. Although studies are yet to prove exactly what it is about bullet casing that makes it the most effective to fairies, the results are very well known. The simple smell of brass casings give fairies a euphoric “high”, and actually touching a casing (fired or not) gives them a burst of orgasmic bliss. A strange part about fairy biology and brass is that they never become used to the sensations that the metal gives them. Unlike a humanoid drug user who needs increasingly higher and higher doses to achieve a good “high”, a fairy exposed to a small amount of brass for years on end will still feel the same effects. It is not in particular known when, where, or how fairies originated or evolved, but there is a very popular creation story that the fairies themselves like to tell. The legend says that some eldritch god of nature whose name has been lost to time fell in love with a mortal wood elf named Fayree who loved nature as much as a mortal possibly could. The god swore to Fayree that he would wed her, and that they would spend the rest of their days together in the most beautiful forest where they would raise a family of their own. To prove his love, the god used his power and formed the most beautiful forest ever imagined, and in the middle of it was a massive tree that bore glowing fruit. Overcome with such a display of love, the wood elf happily agreed, and they wed under the light of a full moon under the tree in the center of the forest. The couple would spend many of their days under this tree, it being their most beloved spot. However, tragedy struck while Fayree was pregnant with the god's child, and she was killed by a wandering ork who trespassed into their home. The god slew the ork, but it was too late, both his wife and unborn child were dead. Overcome with grief, the god buried his wife under the tree at the center of the forest. He swore to both the soul of his wife and the soul of his unborn child that they would live again. He infused the true with a great burst of magic, and it suddenly went into full bloom, growing dozens of glowing fruits. When the fruits split from the tree and fell, a small person with the wings of a butterfly emerged from the fruit. Seeing that the small flying creatures had the spirit and temperance of his wife, the god laughed in joy at his new creation, and he named them after her, calling them “child of fayree” or “fayrees”. (Archivist's note: what the fuck is this name, seriously.) Habitats: Fairies natural habitats are in forest and wooded areas, with plenty of cover and foliage where they can hide. However, this is a generalization, and each fairy is a unique individual who will live wherever they please, sometimes to the ire of other creatures. When a fairy has found a home they like, there is little that can be done to dissuade or remove them. Behaviors: The behavior of fairies is that of a small, pure, innocent being. Fairies often enough can tell a persons disposition by just being around them, knowing the difference between a genuinely nice person, and a silver-tongued backstabber. Most fairies are good-natured at heart, albeit natural tricksters. Fairies enjoy playing “harmless” pranks on people, be it good friends or the wandering adventurer. These pranks are often of the magical type, and while good-natured, might have unnecessarily devastating consequences that can cause irreparable damage to less magically attuned creatures, much to the fairies horror. A common occurrence among fairies is their ability to create a strong emotional bond with people. A fairy will create this bond with a person who they feel is a “kind soul”. The parameter for this is hazy at best, but often it is just a person who has been kind to them and possibly shared food and brass casings with the fairy. This strong emotional bond varies from individual to individual, being anywhere from good friends to something like a high school crush, to even a lover. Although rare, it is not unheard of for fairies to fall in love with humans or other larger creatures many times their own size. It is not really known how these relationships work, but there have been unconfirmed rumors of half-fairy demi children resulting from these affairs. All fairies have an innate sense of risk and adventure. Each fairy -at least once in their life- will run off on an adventure, either exploring with travelers, joining (or creating) a band of mercs, or even founding a business on their own. While their diminutive stature and childish behavior might cause people to see these endeavors as foolish, a fairie's spirit and motivation more than make up for their lack of size. Fairies don’t typically hunt and kill creatures in the wild, instead of subsiding on berries, honey, and taking bits of meat and sustenance from other animals kills. A fairy will often try and bargain with travelers for snacks, food, and brass. If these bargains don’t go as planned, and the fairy comes out empty handed, the fairy will often result in sneaking and stealing more than they originally were asking for. Although very individualistic, fairies are pack animals, and often travel in groups or with other creatures. A group of fairies will sometimes become very organized, and it is not unheard of for “fairy mafias” to exist, however, these are simply rumors at best and yet to be confirmed to exist, but there is evidence of this in the case of aaaaa aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaaaaaa ANNDJFUWERHFPJWHEOUHPW aaaaaHEFOUHPWEUHFPOIWEHFOW EIHFOIWEUHFOIEHFOIEHF[OWIE aaaaaaaaaaaaaa a ewffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffdrvgefr frbqdgbqeb r fffaaaaaaaaaaaaa NOTE: all mentions of fairy mafias are stupid and definitely do not exist.
