Fuck, man. What did I just get myself into? >Be me, hired to cover a caravan from a dwarven mine to a US sanctioned outpost. >10 long caravan of surplus'd US Army 6x6 trucks and Humvees with mounted M2s. >In the trucks was A LOT of raw gold in stacked crates. Fort Knox would be jealous. >I'm napping in one of the gun trucks. Trying, and failing, to use a gold crate as a pillow. >We're around an hour away from the outpost when the lead Humvee is suddenly scooped up and flung into a hillside. >Eyes go skyward when we hear on the radio, "DRAGON! THREE O'CLOCK!" >Sure enough, This black-scaled fucker swings around and torches a Humvee. >Don't know how, but the driver manages swerve the fireball of a Humvee into a ditch and bail out. Can't say the same about the gunner. >Needless to say, every gun in the convoy opened up on the Dragon. Aside from half a dozen mounted 50 cals, nearly everyone had an AR or bolt action of some kind, so if we were hurting it, it wasn't sure wasn't showing. >We barely slowed down enough to pick up the surviving driver. I had threaten to shoot our truck driver to get him to slow down. >Survivor barely manages to hang onto the side rails and climb aboard. >Survivor rolls around to put out a flame. I grab a nearby water bottle and dump it on her. >Barely had time to notice it was gril when she grabbed a gunner's AR and started mag dumping at the Dragon. >We all hear on the radio, "aim for the wings!" >Turns out it worked, the Dragon flinched and kept a bit of distance, just circling around us. >As it swung around our left side, something crashes into one of the gun trucks from our right. Something with wings. >A fucking Wyvern. >I thought Dragons were solitary creatures. Shows what I know. >Eyes go everywhere. There's Wyverns everywhere. Too many to count. It's like a beehive swarming a bear. >Did the Dragon draw our attention away from the incoming Wyverns? >Clever girl. >Guns open up everywhere. Even so, the Wyverns swarm us. >Unlike the Dragon, Wyverns are small enough that the .50 cals and the occasional .308 can kill one, if you shoot it enough. >But some start slipping through the gunfire. A few trucks get rammed off the road. No survivors this time. >As we're all mag dumping into the sky, I hear someone scream, "INCOMING!" >A Wyvern crashes into the front of our truck, crushing the driver. >The sudden, violent drop in speed flings me forward, right below the Wyvern's head. >It's looking right at me. >I bring up my AR and unload into its gut. End up getting blood and guts all over me. >It's bleeding, it's roaring, but it's alive and pissed. >Just before it can lunge down and make a meal out of me, something slices into its neck, the head hanging by a bit of skin. >As the body falls off the side, goddamn Dragon Slayer himself walks up and helps me up. >Yes, I know it was a Wyvern he killed and not a Dragon, but just work with me. >Dragon Slayer was one intense looking guy: bald head, scruffy beard, wearing combat boots, camo pants and a leather vest. >Best part was, he didn't have a gun, but an axe of all things. >I've seen people meme'ing around with swords, but I've never seen someone actually make it work. >You won't hear me complaining >Before I could say anything, Survivor yells out, "Dragon! Right side!" >Look over and see the Dragon's joined the fray, and coming right at us. >A side gunner and Survivor open up, and I reach for a fresh mag. >Before I could start shooting, Dragon Slayer stops me and yells, "Hold onto something!" >Everyone does so, just as the Dragon raises its front claws and snatches us up into the sky. >Everyone's hanging on for dear life. Dragon Slayer, Side Gunner and I. That is, everyone aside from Survivor. >She's clinging onto a side rail with one hand, while mag dumping her AR with the other, all the while shouting every obscenity in the book >Is it okay to fall in love with crazy? >I don't know how Survivor pulled it off, but the Dragon gave a roar, just before it let go of the truck. >The truck was sturdy, so it held together in the impact. I, on the other hand, was flung out, along with several crates of gold. >I didn't land as intact as the truck, however. I ended up breaking several bones and got a nice amount of whiplash. >Not wanting to keep pressure on some very clearly cracked ribs, I roll onto my back, to see the Dragon standing right over me. >As I wonder whether it's gonna roast me before it eats me, I realize it's not exactly looking at me. >It's looking at the gold scattered all around me. >I vaguely recalled hearing that Dragons were obsessed with hoarding treasures, especially gold. The Dwarves were makes a big deal about it back at the mines. >I really should have payed attention during orientation. >As I stare at the Dragon, I see its eyes go from the gold to me. Then it gave this guttural growl. >Aw crap. It finally noticed me. >Before the Dragon could do anything, a .50 BMG smacked it on the back of the head, followed by a few more down the its back. >Several yards away was the overturned truck, with Side Gunner still firing away on his M2. >I swear, I can still hear him yelling, "GET SOME! GET SOME!" >The dragon turned towards the truck and reared its head back, giving a very audible inhale. >Before it could let out a fireball, it flinched, then scratched at its eye. It faced to the right and gave a very furious roar. >Not too far from the truck was Survivor, lying prone and taking shots at the Dragon's eye. Whether she was using some sort of spell to help her aim, or it was divine intervention keeping her aim true, I'll likely never know. >As I watched the crazy scene before me, someone sat me up and dropped my AR onto my lap. I looked up. It was Dragon Slayer. Aside from some dirt and grime, he was none the worse for wear. What the hell was this guy made of? >He rushed towards the Dragon, axe in hand as I'm wondering, "How the hell are we still alive?" >As Dragon Slayer cleared the short distance between him and the Dragon, he yelled out what I assume was some sort of spell. Whatever it was, it got the Dragon's attention. >Before it could do anything, Dragon Slayer's axe cleaved into the Dragon's hind leg, tearing through scale and muscle like it was nothing. >The Dragon actually gave a shriek of pain and spread its wings. The bitch was bailing out. >Bad luck for the Dragon, one of Side Gunner's shots hit right where one of the wings met the body. The wing twitched and spasmed. Maybe he broke a bone. Whatever it was, it rendered the wing useless. >Not one to be left out, I lined up my shot and aimed for the Dragon's face. I like to think I helped. >Between the machine gun fire breaking its wing bones, getting pelted in the face by 5.56 NATO and a crazy axe-man hacking at its limbs, the Dragon was thrashing around, trying anything to get away. >In what was likely some desperate attempt to get Dragon Slayer to stop cutting its leg off, the Dragon started to prep again for another fireball. >I can very vividly remember how it opened its mouth to inhale. How my red dot lined up right down its mouth. And how I pulled the trigger the moment the flames began to form. >Whatever I hit, it snapped its mouth shut. You could hear the Dragon grunting between the retching before it heaved out a mix of flammable liquid and blood. >The Dragon thrashed around for a bit, spraying blood everywhere. It gave one more roar before it collapsed to the ground, twitching and groaning before it finally lay still and silent. >It took a few moments, but then it dawned on me: we killed a Dragon. >I gave myself a moment to breath before forcing my legs to work and limp towards the other gathered three. >We all looked at each other and the sorry states that we were in. For some reason, that made us all laugh. Maybe the shock was setting in, I don't know. >Just before I could ask for their names, we heard something screech. >We looked up. The Wyverns, dozens of them, were circling like vultures. >We stared up at the sight, expecting to get torn to bits. >Well, maybe not Dragon Slayer. He'd likely cut his way out of Wyvern. >But, after standing around for what felt like an eternity, the Wyverns didn't come in for the kill. >Not ones to question why, we made our way back to the road. >Once we put some distance on the Dragon corpse, the Wyverns pounced, tearing the fire-breathing lizard to pieces. >Something was watching out for us. There had to be. In the end, we had to walk about a couple of hours to reach the outpost. The Wyverns were too busy eating the Dragon to pay us any attention. Believe it or not, a couple of trucks managed to survive with their gold intact, so we're getting paid. Yay. The only problem now is my little situation. While in the infirmary, I gave my debrief. I assumed it would be open and shut, but now there's guards at the door. Even weirder, there's been this parade of Elves, Dwarves, Humans and all kinds of races coming in and asking the same questions. All of them taking notes and whispering to one another. I'm assuming the same thing is happening to the other three. I haven't seen them since we got back. Best part is, I'm not allowed to leave. If you guys don't hear from me again, it's either because I've been executed for breaking some ancient law, or I've been forced to be some Chosen One hero or something. Fuck, maybe I'll get a harem. Wish me luck!
